Legends

Thanks to Benoit Cheval for these legends

Pierra Menta

The Pierra Menta, cliff made of conglomerate that the climbers appreciate, gave its name to the famous chase of ski climbing (in the gargantuan lowerings!) The mountain is certainly for which the legend is most known. It is attributed to Gargantua who would have untied an enormous rock of the massive of Aravis in fabulous one kick. The splitted block thrown in the air would have crashed between Beaufortain and Tarentaise giving birth to Pierra Menta (litteraly stone of the middle) and opening the pass of Aravis. The tracks of passages millenniums which we find in its foot also give him a mystic aspect. Its position is that of the border in the intersection of two regions: Beaufortain and Tarentaise. Its name Pierra Menta would also want to say stone which rises. Wooden statuettes and Latin inscriptions not far from there confirm that it is about an ancient stopping-off place.

Fayottés

More than two hundred years ago, here is what took place in Valezan.

Les "Fayottés", kinf of small spirits, went to steal with impunity the grain in the attic of meufles, (word of dialect which relates probably to the muzzle of cows). These last ones, tired of these robberies, lighted a fire in the forest which was known to them as refuge. This forest extended formerly over the dome de Vaugel up to the hameau des Fours. Today, no trees grows there. Is it the consequence of the curse of les fayottés?
