"Landry --> Plan de la Lai - Wednesday August 25th 1999 The ascent on the northern sunny side of the Isère valley is of course long -to cross the Isère near Bellentre, I had to go down to 720 m, and the next pass is again at 2470- but never too steep ; there are small woods, orchards, meadows further upside. At Valezan, I stop for a coffee cup and a slice of cake at the gîte d'étape ; the owner is cutting mushrooms in a large pan ("but that's only for the family", she explains -she would be too afraid of litigation if a customer got ill after a mushroom meal ; as one can see, the best of American civilization is slowly seeping through the French countryside).
After col de Bresson, I enter Beaufortain with views on the artificial lake of Roselend. Probably due to some haze in the sky, perhaps because the hills in view there are lower than they were in the Vanoise and will be around Mont-Blanc, I remember these few kilometers are much less interesting than most of the GR. Anyway, I stop when I meet a road, and hitch-hike to Beaufort ; tomorrow morning the first bus will bring me to the train station at Albertville ... read more "
